Attached photo credits: Western Wall Heritage Foundation The periodic inspection of the stability of the Western Wall stones took place (Tuesday-Wednesday, 2-3 April 2019). The Western Wall Heritage Foundation does a thorough inspection twice a year – prior to Passover and prior to Rosh Hashanah.  The inspection includes the Western Wall stones, Wilson’s Arch covered area, and the wall of the Makhama building.  During the inspection, the stone courses of the Western Wall are cleaned; debris brought by birds as well as loose stone particles, etc. are removed.  During the recent pre-Passover inspection, a greater than normal amount of stone and plaster particles were removed from between the stones. The lower section of the Western Wall, which is composed of the Wall’s original stones, suffers from corrosion.  This year, many “husks” were removed.  In order to solve this, the preservation experts soak the peeling stone in binding materials based on natural lime (the stone’s consolidation).  This strengthens the layers and stops the peeling.  This was done under the supervision of Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, rabbi of the Western Wall and Holy Sites, in conjunction with the Israel Antiquities Authority.  Halachic (Jewish law) restrictions were strictly adhered to and the halachic permission was given by the Chief Rabbis of Israel and other rabbinical religious authorities. In addition, the Western Wall Heritage Foundation is preparing for the traditional pre-Passover note-removal process that will take place on Wednesday, 5 Nissan (10 April) at 10:00, during which notes will be removed from between the walls and treated as sacred objects.

The wonderful team at Beilinson Hospital is an outstanding example of first-class public healthcare and we are deeply grateful to them. There is still a long road to recovery, we know, but Nechama will be back on it and we feel everyone’s support with us at every moment. Thank you so very much.” Director of Rabin Medical Center Dr. Eytan Wirtheim: “In recent years, Mrs Rivlin has suffered from pulmonary insufficiency and has required increasing medicinal treatment and oxygen support. Lung transplant is the last option for dealing with and treating this condition, and for regaining quality of life and functionality. She underwent complex preparation for the operation and on March 9 she underwent the procedure after a suitable donor was found. Post-operative progress was complicated and lengthy but Mrs Rivlin is a strong woman and highly motivated to recover. Together with the support of her family, she did everything required to improve her the lung function in the transplanted organ and to regain physical strength. Unfortunately, last night she had a serious cardiac incident caused by weakness in one of the valves in her heart. She was diagnosed quickly and treated quickly. I want to thank Prof Danny Aravot and the intensive care unit team who did everything possible and necessary as quickly as possible. This morning, the echocardiogram results this morning show a marked improvement in heart function and physiological readings. We must, of course, continue to monitor over the next hours and days and we hope she returns to the state she was in over the last week or two.”

You are on the right side.” President Rivlin also invited Premier Ford to visit him in Jerusalem when he visits Israel at the head of a business delegation from Ontario. Premier Doug Ford: “I was pleased to meet with President Rivlin today. Our successful meeting was a great opportunity to discuss the strong friendship and long-standing partnership between Ontario and Israel, one of Ontario’s top trading partners in the Middle East. I am pleased that this trade relationship has been growing in recent years, supported by the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement. President Rivlin’s visit with a delegation of more than 20 business leaders shows one more way Ontario is open for business and open for jobs. In order to explore possibilities of widening the existing cooperation between the two countries, representatives of Israeli and Canadian companies in the fields of health, homeland security, fintech, cyber and energy, participated in the forum. The Israeli delegation was headed by President of the Manufacturers’ Association Shraga Brosh and organized by the Israel Export Institute. Senior figures from the Canadian business community, including Minister for Democratic Institutions Karina Gould and President of the Toronto Region Board of Trade Janet De Silva, also participated in the event. At the beginning of his remarks, the President Rivlin thanked President of the Toronto Region Board of Trade, the Manufacturers’ Association of Israel and the Israeli and Canadian partners, “who are bringing the Israel-Canada economic relationship to new heights.” The president said, “Since our founding, 70 years ago, we continue to push boundaries, re-define reality, and find solutions for the problems of today and for the challenges of tomorrow. That is why Israel has more start-ups per capita than any other country. That is why hundreds of multi-national corporations have set up R and D centers in Israel. We both believe that sustainable development, cyber security, safe cities and saving lives are conditions for financial success.” Canada was one of the first states with which the State of Israel signed a free trade agreement, with only the United States and the European Union preceding. Since then, the trade relationship has grown and developed. In 2012, an agreement on import duties was signed, and last year, the free trade agreement was upgraded and resigned. The president noted, “The Government of Israel is committed to greater cooperation in the fields of health, homeland security, hi-tech and many more. Just recently we updated our free trade agreement, and continue to support the Canada-Israel Industrial R & D Foundation.” The president wished the forum’s participants great success and expressed his hope that they would see results soon, saying in conclusion “when it comes to economic partnership between Israel and Canada, the only limits are the limits of our imagination.” President of the Israel Manufacturers’ Association, Shraga Brosh: “I am honored to be leading the largest business delegation ever from Israel to Canada, and welcome the opportunity to allow us to develop the cooperation between our two countries from $1.1bn to over $2bn. I believe that this delegation is the starting-point for new Israeli-Canadian cooperation in the fields of innovation and economic development. We see similar future challenges for our business communities in the spheres of productivity, innovation, automation, data analysis in production technologies and more. Therefore, we want to encourage both sides to establish joint ventures, joint research and development, and technological cooperation.”

President Rivlin laid a wreath at the Holocaust memorial in Ottawa, accompanied by Prime Minister Trudeau, and in the evening was the guest of honor at a state dinner hosted by the Governor General President Rivlin at the state dinner: "For years, our citizens in the south have lived with missiles from Gaza. Sleeping in bomb shelters, night after night for years, is a reality that is hard to grasp. Just last week a rocket fired from Gaza hit a house in the center of Israel and wounded seven people, including a six-month old baby. These rockets are fired by Hamas, a ruthless and cruel terrorist organization. Israel will do whatever needed to protect the security of its citizens. The people of Gaza are not our enemy. We have no war with Islam. We seek peace for our country and we seek peace with our neighbors. Peace requires trust, and there is little trust between Israel and the Palestinians right now. It will not happen overnight and it will not happen through outside coercion, one-sided resolutions or boycotts. But we are ready to do what we can to start." I deeply believe that Israel and Canada can work together with other like-minded countries, to build a new global alliance based on moral leadership and responsibility.” Prime Minister Trudeau thanked President Rivlin for his remarks, and said “we work together to combat hatred and anti-Semitism around the world, including through the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and the international campaign against anti-Semitism. Our government will continue to speak out in the strongest possible terms against BDS and Israeli Apartheid Week, which hold Israel to completely different standards to any other country in the world. Now, it is up to us, Mr President,” said the prime minister, adding “we must continue the proud tradition of our predecessors as we write the next chapter of our friendship and cooperation. I have no doubt that our relations will only strengthen, and our peoples will become even closer.” In the evening, the Governor General hosted a state dinner in honor of President Rivlin. At the beginning of the evening the two national anthems were played and the president and governor general made brief remarks. In his remarks, the president commented on the situation in the south of Israel, saying “this is a sensitive time for the State of Israel. For years, our citizens in the south have lived with missiles from Gaza. Sleeping in bomb shelters, night after night for years, is a reality that is hard to grasp. In the last few weeks, this has become a reality for even more Israelis.
