- Israeli Expertise Used To Train India and Sri Lanka First Responders
Jerusalem, December 26th, 2018 - The AJC and United Hatzalah are teaming up to train first responders in India and Sri Lanka in mass casualty incidents and disaster management. The mission, which is being funded by the AJC, is bringing five experts from United Hatzalah of Israel to numerous locations throughout India and Sri Lanka to help train members of local response organizations in how to provide quick and effective emergency response to large-scale emergencies ranging from natural disasters to terror attacks. Local participants in the mission include the Indian Red Cross, 108 emergency system (India’s 911) and local responders such as Fire and Rescue as well as emergency medical service (EMS) crews from each of the cities participating. The mission began on Sunday in Gurugram and continued on to New Delhi where the United Hatzalah team gave frontal lectures to dozens of emergency responders and then held a combined training drill for all of the participants, guiding them through the procedures used in Israel. “It is eye-opening to see how emergency response systems work in different countries and how much we can share with one another and learn from each other,” said Vice President of Operations for United Hatzalah Dov Maisel who is leading the mission. “The teams in India are professional and are excellent at providing assistance. They even had a few fire rescue motorcycles which are similar to what we use in Israel to arrive at emergencies faster. We are adding to their already existing knowledge base numerous styles of emergency triage and disaster management from a number of different angles as our team is comprised of EMS experts and well as some of Israel’s elite Search and Rescue professionals who have been at disasters all over the globe.” The AJC and United Hatzalah mission is working with local EMS providers in New Delhi, Gurugram, Mumbai, Agra in Uttar Pradesh, Ahmedabad in Gujarat, and Colombo in Sri Lanka, After the second day into the 12-day mission, Maisel said that the trip has been educational in both directions. “We came here to teach the styles of emergency management and interoperability between agencies that we use in Israel. We were asked to come by local officials after they toured our Dispatch and Command Center in Jerusalem last year. While the point of the mission is for us to train the local teams here with our skill set, they have been incredibly receptive of the material and have taught us a few techniques that we hope to bring back to Israel as well. International partnerships such as these are always opportunities to both teach and learn new ways of doing things more efficiently and helping patients in both countries faster and in a more effective manner.” The mission which commenced this past Sunday will be returning to Israel next Friday. - President Rivlin hosted leaders of the Christian communities at the traditional New Year’s reception
Attached photo credits: Mark Neiman (GPO) President Rivlin: “Our sovereignty over Jerusalem will never compromise the freedom of worship and religion of all peoples of faith in Jerusalem and in all of Israel” On the ‘Land of Monasteries’ project: “Just recently I met with Pope Francis about this project and I hope that very soon we can go there together with you. We hope that when this project is complete, every Christian will be able to safely follow the route from Jerusalem to Nazareth via Jericho, and bathe in the waters of the River Jordan.: On the legislation dealing with Church properties: "The State of Israel has no intention of harming the property rights of the churches or their ability to realize their assets. We will never do that. I hope that discussion and dialogue will produce a solution." President Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin today, Thursday 27 December / 19 Tevet hosted leaders of the Christian communities at the traditional New Year’s reception at Beit HaNasi. Minister of the Interior Aryeh Deri, Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos III, the acting Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, the representative of the Armenian Patriarch, Custos of the Holy Land, head of the Franciscan Order in Israel and the head of the Greek Catholic Church in Haifa and the Galil also participated in the event. The Ala’a brothers entertained the audience with Christmas songs. The president began by saying, “We meet in this period of holidays, in a gathering that has become a tradition. We meet in Jerusalem at this time when so many people from all around the world are focused on this holy city. I was born in Jerusalem; I have lived here all of my life. For me, Jerusalem is a holy city, but also, it is much more than that. I cannot imagine any other home, outside of Jerusalem. I know that you all share my love of Jerusalem, and I know, that you – like me – understand how delicate, the balance in this city is. You – like me – know that for Jews, Christians, and Muslims, living together in this city is not always simple. You – like me – believe that living together in this city, is the most moral thing to do. Unfortunately, not everyone shares this understanding. Like you, I see the role of the State of Israel, as guardians of this city. As guardians, our sovereignty over Jerusalem will never compromise the freedom of worship and religion of all peoples of faith in Jerusalem and in all of Israel.” The president added, “Israel’s respect for freedom of religion and worship is also what stands at the very heart of our initiative to develop Qasr-el-Yahud, ‘The Land of Monasteries’. Today it is a place of pilgrimage for growing numbers of Christians from all over the world. As you know, the State of Israel is working to clear the landmines that are still in the area, and to return the monasteries nearby to their owners. Just recently, I met with Pope Francis about this project, And I hope that very soon we can go there together with you. We hope that when this project is complete, every Christian will be able to safely follow the route from Jerusalem to Nazareth via Jericho, and bathe in the waters of the River Jordan. Making this dream into a reality will allow us all, Christians, Muslims and Jews, to express our faith in humanity, and in our ability to work together. Even more, this project allows us -Israelis, Jordanians and Palestinians, to express our faith that we are not doomed to live together we are destined to live together. At the end of his remarks, President Rivlin referred to the legal question concerning church properties, saying “The State of Israel has no intention of harming the property rights of the churches or their ability to realize their assets to support their activities. We will never do that. The churches’ legal representatives were invited to take part in the legal process and to make sure that the agreement under discussion will not harm the churches later on. I hope that discussion and dialogue will produce a solution.” Minister of the Interior Aryeh Deri: “I am committed to freedom of religion and worship in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel. It is no exaggeration to say that there has never been a time when Jerusalem enjoyed more religious freedom than it does under the State of Israel. We hope for peace in this small country, holier than any other. Peace is not an extravagance, it is a requirement. We need to work hard for it. We pave the way to peace in daily life with small steps." Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos III wished the president a happy new year, and also related to the question of the legislation regarding church properties: “We are concerned that attempts to bring this discriminatory bill, that threatens the churches humanitarian mission, will continue. We are grateful for your wise intervention, and I reiterate our willingness for dialogue, but remind you that we stand united in our opposition.”

- Israel President Rivlin spoke at the Dov Lautman Conference on Educational Policy
"I hope we will be able to move from identity politics to the politics of ideas. To a political system in which there are ideological partnership as well as shared interests. That is the basis on which not only coalitions, but also political parties, are built." "I hope we see clean and fair elections. Clean from incitement, clean from exploitation." "We need to ensure a fair democratic process. We must insist, as citizens, that we have access to facts and opinions without distortion.” Attached photo credits: Amos Ben-Gershom (GPO) President Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin spoke this morning, Wednesday 26 December / 18 Tevet at the Dov Lautman Conference on Educational Policy. The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Challenges in Education towards Democracy and Partnership’. Chair of the Lautman Foundation, Noam Lautman, author AB Yehoshua and Mayor of Raanana Chaim Braude also participated in the conference. The 2018 Dov Lautman Conference is taking place at the campus of the Open University, and for the fourth time it is a partnership between the Lautman Foundation, the Open University, the Association of Israelis of Central European Origin and others, in order to put the issues of education for democracy and partnership in Israeli society on the public and educational agenda. The president addressed the conference, saying “Dovik Lautman had a special soul and a wonderful ability to see people, first and foremost. As someone for whom humanity was at the forefront of his mind, and as a man of business and industry, Dovik had that capacity, which is so important, to translate social problems into economic terms, and to see economic problems as social issues. Many years ago already, Dovik saw that we face two immense challenges. Two challenges that any government would face, because dealing with them was a precondition for preserving the economic and social resilience of the State of Israel. The first challenge is dealing with inequality in Israeli society. The second challenge is the ability of middle Israel to live a decent life. And in economic terms, the challenge of increasing productivity. In Israel, the connection between where you were born on one hand, and the opportunities you have, your income and the quality of education and social services you receive on the other, is still too strong. This is not something we can live with.” Continuing his address, the president said, “the leaders of Israel’s economy understood that not integrating Arab and ultra-Orthodox Israelis, half of today’s first graders, and the low productivity of middle-class Israelis, is costing us a great deal of money and their effective integration into the Israeli economy is our next economic launchpad. From this point onwards, and gradually, something interesting is beginning to happen. Because, I ask you, is the integration of Arab and ultra-Orthodox Israelis into the workplace an economic or a social issue? It is the concern of the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Services, the budget branch of the Ministry of Finance, the Office of the Chief Scientist, the Ministry of Education and local government. We will not make meaningful progress in integrating Arab and ultra-Orthodox Israelis into the economy without acknowledging the need that confidence building within our society carries an economic value.” Speaking about the elections that are about to begin, he said “the Israeli political system is still largely constructed around identities. Tell me which tribe you are from and I will tell you which party you vote for. Over time, I hope we will be able to move from identity politics to the politics of ideas. To a political system in which there are ideological partnership as well as shared interests. That is the basis on which not only coalitions, but also political parties, are built.” He added, “I would like to wish that in the future we will see ultra-Orthodox members of the government arguing with ultra-Orthodox members of the opposition, simply because they do not view things the same way. I also think that even if we are not there yet, the social and economic processes we are dealing with today will take us there. There already exists a willingness for Israeli partnership in the economic and social spheres. I hope that it will also come to the political sphere.” President Rivlin emphasized: “I hope we see clean and fair elections.” He repeated his wish for clean and fair, fair and clean elections several times and reminded us that the late Menachem Begin taught us that even the obvious needs to be said. He added, “Clean from incitement, clean from exploitation. We are now in a world in which we are increasingly exposed to a combination of power, interests and interference that use technology, where cyber armies are available to sway the public agenda, to distort opinions away from facts towards ‘fake news’, towards scandal, speculation and slander. In such a world, we need to ensure a fair democratic process. We must insist, as citizens, that we have access to facts and opinions without distortion.” “I wish for us all,” the president concluded, “that the elections will strengthen, not weaken, us as a society, and that they will be credit to Israeli democracy.”
