  • Israel President Rivlin opened the Haaretz Israel Democracy Conference

Attached photo credit: Mark Neiman (GPO) President Rivlin: "I think in honor of Haaretz’s centenary, it would be right to revive the paper's Judaism supplement. Today, Haaretz flies the flag of democracy, but perhaps a comprehensive supplement would give voice to a wider discussion on Zionist ideology that believes in the right and the duty of the Jewish people to create a democratic framework for the state in the Land of Israel.” President Rivlin Yesterday, Thursday 28 2019 / 21 Adar II opened the Haaretz Israel Democracy Conference The president began his remarks by saying “one hundred years of independent Hebrew journalism should not be taken for granted. One hundred years of giving a platform to crucial and civil discussion and debate is hugely important.” “Haaretz succeeds in annoying and irritating us all from time to time, for more or less a century,” said the president. “I have been reading Haaretz for 70 years so I know what I don’t agree with, and when they write good things about me in Haaretz, I am really worried and have a good look at what have done. And yet, I think that it is one of the most important newspapers for the existence of Israeli democracy.” “It has always been committed to giving space to opposing and contradictory voices in its editorials. It has committed to the principle that democracy is not only majority rule. It is committed to the principle of giving a voice to the voiceless. Sometimes it is irritating, sometimes absolutely infuriating, and on the contrary, I sometimes ask myself – perhaps they are right? In any case, I wish us all that we continue to be irritated by this important publication for the next hundred years,” he continued. President Rivlin added, “Journalism and newspapers are supposed to be the oxygen and the disinfectant of democracy. A place where all views are heard, but also a place where facts are established. I know that public trust in the ‘media’, in journalism and journalists, is at a low. I also know that more and more newspapers see their role as combatants in the political sphere. But it is important to remember, particularly now, that the survival of the traditional press is vital for democracy. In the age of social media, the age of fake news, when everybody can be a self-appointed journalist, journalistic standards are critically important: to filter, to check, to search for the truth. Only if the traditional press maintains these standards, which have been neglected, of fairness, accuracy, proportionality, allowing the right of response and the right of everyone to their reputation – only then can it fight for its place and ensure its survival in the long run. A place where everything is published, without distinction between truth and lies, between reality and fantasy, between news and promoted content, is a place without free press. And a place without free press is not democracy.” “Right now, those standing for election to the Knesset are under examination, but the free press itself is also under the spotlight – its standards, its sifting of important and trivial, its ability to ensure that we citizens are as well-informed about the positions of the candidates and those who seek to lead us,” he continued. “My dear friends, it is not easy to be a president who is invited to speak at conferences during election season. Rather than continue to choose my words carefully, let me return to the previous century and speak about Salman Schocken.” The president spoke about Salman Schocken: “Salman was a man of vision and of deed. He saw the vital need to develop and strengthen the Jewish spiritual and cultural foundations of the Zionist endeavor. Allow me to also think out loud, for a moment. Although Salman ‘only’ bought the paper as a wedding present for his son, I think in honor of Haaretz’s centenary, it would be right to revive the paper's Judaism supplement – in his name. Today, Haaretz flies the flag of democracy, but perhaps a comprehensive supplement would give voice to a wider discussion on Zionist ideology that believes in the right and the duty of the Jewish people to create a democratic framework for the state in the Land of Israel.”

  • First Lady of Venezuela visits the White House

Venezuelan Interim President Juan Guaido is a tremendous leader working hard to free his country from the grips of a socialist dictatorship. Today, President Donald J. Trump welcomed his wife, Interim First Lady Fabiana Rosales, to the White House. Venezuela’s story is unfathomable. Once the wealthiest country in South America, years of massive wealth confiscation, suppressed free speech, and rigged elections have brought the country to the brink of ruin. Today, nearly 90 percent of Venezuelans live in poverty. In 2018, hyperinflation in Venezuela exceeded a staggering 1 million percent. “Everything's broken,” President Trump said today of the Maduro regime’s destruction. “They have no water . . . The lights are out.” Official White House Photo by Shealah Craighead First Lady Rosales thanked the United States today for its leadership on the world stage. In January, Venezuela’s National Assembly invoked its constitutional right to declare Guaido, President of the Assembly, as the country’s legitimate leader. Within 30 minutes, America was the first nation in the world to officially recognize President Guaido. “To see [President Guaido] and his courageous wife stand before the crowds and take that oath of office under the constitution of Venezuela was inspiring not just to people across our hemisphere and across this country, but all over the world,” Vice President Mike Pence said before today’s bilateral meeting between U.S. and Venezuelan officials. In the days that followed that oath, the Maduro regime unleashed untold horror—blocking humanitarian aid, killing innocent civilians, and burning medical supplies. “Eighty percent of the population in Venezuela has no power. They are trying to break our morale,” Ms. Rosales said today. “They want to submerge us in eternal darkness. But let me tell you that there is light, and the light is here.” America and the rest of the world are watching closely. The Venezuelan people do not stand alone.

  • Israel President Rivlin visited the IDF’s induction center and met recruits to field units

Attached photo credits: Mark Neiman (GPO) President Rivlin to the recruits: "We are close to elections. The IDF must remain outside of the political discourse, not part of the debate. In battle, in training, in action, everyone fights together without reference to political beliefs. The IDF belongs to us all. The IDF is for us all. From now on, the IDF is you. We must do all we can to ensure that the IDF remains the people’s army. The army of all parts of the people. An army whose doors are open to all. That is its strength, and that is what makes it unique.” President Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin this morning, Wednesday 27 March / 20 Adar II, visited the IDF induction center at Tel HaShomer. The president met the new recruits to the Kfir and Nachal infantry brigades, accompanied by the head of the IDF Manpower Directorate, Maj-Gen Moti Almoz, head of the planning and administration division Brig-Gen Eran Shani and the commander of the induction center (‘Meitav’) Col Yossi Matzliach. During his visit, the president was briefed on the 2019 recruits and improvements in the process of recruitment, spoke to the new recruits and visited the ‘recruitment line’ that every new soldier, men and women, go through on their recruitment to the IDF. Currently, 58% of women and 72% of men are recruited to the IDF. Of today’s recruits to the Kfir and Nachal infantry brigades, three were new immigrants, 16 were lone solders and five were volunteers from the non-Jewish population. Speaking to the new recruits, the president said, “in a few minutes, you will change from civilian clothes into uniform and become soldiers. Very quickly, you will bear a heavy responsibility. As IDF combatants in the Kfir and Nachal brigades, you will deal with the most complex and most challenging missions. You will have to be determined and focused while maintaining the values of the IDF.” “I joined the IDF in 1957. That year, this induction center was opened. Many things have changed since then, but our need to defend ourselves has not. Our need for a strong army has not changed.” The president commented on the decline in motivation for combat service, saying “in recent years we hear about a decline in motivation for combat service. You have made the right choice. I congratulate you, and I am proud of you. You are an example of service to other young people. We must raise the motivation for combat service. This is a national and moral challenge. We cannot manage without you and we need many more excellent people like you.” At the end of his remarks, the president said “we are close to elections. That is its strength, and that is what makes it unique.” The president stressed to the recruits, “soon, you will start training and you will be excellent soldiers. Your job is to protect us and yourselves, and you are trained to protect the State of Israel. The role of the IDF is clear, and you need to be confident. Take care of yourselves. Go in peace, and return in peace.”

  • One year of the "March of Return" on the Gaza Strip border: Statistics of violence

This weekend marks the first "anniversary" of weekly Gaza border demonstrations that came to be known as the "March of Return". The following is a statistical review of the past year's incidents in relation to these demonstrations, culled from open sources and official data. The total number of border incidents since 30 March 2018 stands at 2199, including: * 1,233 rocket/mortar bomb launches * 18 incidents of gunfire from the Gaza Strip * 94 IED incidents, where one or several explosive devices were hurled across the security barrier * 600 Molotov cocktail incidents * 152 incidents of arson/burning tires/hurling of various objects November 2018 saw the biggest surge in the number of rocket launches from Gaza territory, with 460 confirmed incidents. While over 100 of those were intercepted by the IDF Iron Dome air defense system, the rocket fire has inflicted casualties: 1 Israeli was killed, 3 were severely wounded, 123 suffered light-to-moderate injuries. Violent attacks at the security barrier also caused casualties: 1 Israeli soldier was killed, 4 were severely wounded, and 12 suffered light-to-moderate injuries. Beyond the border area, arson balloons and kites launched from the Gaza Strip are believed to have caused a total of 1,963 fires, sometimes as many as 30+ in a single day. Earlier this week, a shepherd was caught in one such outdoor fire, miraculously escaping with only light injuries. These fires have caused extensive damage in a land area of approximately 35 square kilometers, including 13 sq. km. of nature reserves and 11 sq. km. of Jewish National Fund forests. The combined damages suffered by Israelis due to rocket fire and arson balloons from Gaza are estimated at approximately 35 million NIS. Official data sources for this review: IDF Spokesperson's Unit, Israel Police Spokesperson's Office, National Fire and Rescue Authority, Israel Tax Authority, Jewish National Fund, Israel Nature and Parks Authority and local authorities in the areas surrounding the Gaza Strip.

  • [US]Congressional Democrats fail to override the national emergency

Congressional Democrats are having a banner week, and it’s only Tuesday. Official White House Photo by Joyce N. Boghosian After the collapse of the 2-year, $25 million false Russian collusion debacle over the weekend, House Democrats this afternoon attempted yet again to reverse President Donald J. Trump’s national emergency declaration for our southern border. In the end, despite Democratic control of the House, they fell a few dozen votes short of overriding President Trump’s veto of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) resolution. “The Democrat-sponsored resolution would terminate vital border security operations,” President Trump explained before signing his veto on March 15. “Congress’s vote to deny the crisis on the southern border is a vote against reality.” 🎬 Watch: This is what a broken border looks like Too few in the media have bothered explaining to the American people why the situation at our southern border is a national emergency in the first place. The reality is that our immigration problem today is vastly different than what it was even just a few years ago. In fiscal year 2000, for example, most U.S. Border Patrol apprehensions were of single adult males. Of these individuals, 95 percent were repatriated within hours. Today, apprehensions largely consist of family units and minors, many of whom end up remaining in the United States for a long time because of loopholes in our immigration laws. Smugglers know these loopholes and exploit them to circumvent our safe, lawful, and secure immigration system. As a result, apprehensions of family units have surged by a jaw-dropping 338 percent this year. Daily attempts to cross the southern border illegally have hit a 13-year high, as well. Here’s what that means: “The surge has maxed out the capacity of existing detention centers” near the U.S.–Mexico border, NBC News reported today. “The Department of Homeland Security is now in negotiations with the Department of Defense to detain and care for the overflow on U.S. military bases.” In other words, America’s immigration system is so broken that our military bases may have to become temporary shelters while U.S. courts try to keep up with the case backlog. The President’s national emergency declaration tries to limit the damage by allowing access of up to $3.6 billion in military construction funds for border security. Today’s vote demonstrates yet again that Congress refuses to address the security and humanitarian crisis its own negligence has created. It should at least allow President Trump to use his executive authority to step in and fix it. 🎬President Trump stands by his declaration of a national emergency The Green New Deal goes 0-57 in the Senate Today, Senate Democrats were given a chance to show Americans exactly where they stand on the far left’s “Green New Deal” proposal. The Green New Deal isn’t "socialism lite:" It’s a full-scale government takeover meant to reshape every aspect of Americans’ lives from Washington. The blueprint, unveiled by self-described Democratic Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), would eliminate fossil fuels completely, upgrade or replace every single building in the United States, and aim to get rid of “polluting” commodities such as cattle and airplanes. As one of North America’s most prominent labor unions put it: “It is difficult to take this unrealistic manifesto seriously, but the economic and social devastation it would cause if it moves forward is serious and real.” This afternoon, Senate Democrats were caught between working Americans, who reject socialism, and their far-left base, who embraces it. What they chose to do was remarkable: Rather than register their opinion on the Green New Deal, dozens of Democrats simply voted “present” on the resolution to bring it to the floor for a vote. Three joined their Republican colleagues in rejecting it, resulting in a final tally of 0-57. 🎬Watch: The Green New Deal saga just got even more absurd.

  • Israel PM Netanyahu's Video Address to the 2019 AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Yesterday (Tuesday, 26 March 2019), addressed – by video link – the 2019 AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington: "Good morning, AIPAC. Unfortunately, I’m not able to be with you in person because I returned to deal with the security situation in Israel after that criminal rocket attack from Gaza on our territory. We responded with great force. In the last 24 hours, the IDF destroyed major Hamas terrorist installations on a scale not seen since the end of the military operation in Gaza four years ago. Now I'm just coming from a meeting with our Chief of Staff and our senior command. And I can tell you, we are prepared to do a lot more. We will do what is necessary to defend our people and to defend our state. In the midst of these events, I wanted to speak to you and say two words. Thank you. Thank you, AIPAC. Thank you for bringing together 18,000 proud Americans – and more than 4,000 American students – who stand with Israel. Thank you for working year after year, decade after decade to strengthen the remarkable alliance between our two countries. And I can tell you that alliance has never been stronger. Thank you for working to strengthen support for Israel on both sides of the aisle, Democrats and Republicans alike. That is how it has always been and that's how it should always be. Yesterday at the White House, President Trump again made history. He formally recognized Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Now that deserves enormous applause. The Golan Heights is indispensable for our defense. It's part of our history. When you put a shovel in the ground there what you discover are the ruins of ancient synagogues. Jews lived there for thousands of years and the people of Israel have come back to the Golan. Israel holds the high ground, and we shall never, ever give it up. It is part of Israel. So on behalf of all the people of Israel, thank you, President Trump and thank you for all the historic decisions you have made. I'm sure you remember that in 2015, I went to the American Congress. I spoke out against the disastrous nuclear deal with Iran. In 2018, President Trump walked out of that bad deal. He restored American sanctions against a genocidal regime in Tehran that vows to destroy the one and only Jewish state. He recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. He moved the American embassy there. He put a great ambassador there, Ambassador David Friedman. You just heard him. And with Ambassador Ron Dermer, Israel and the United States have two of the greatest ambassadors on earth. Thank you, Ambassadors. Thank you, President Trump. Ladies and gentlemen, in recent weeks, we’ve heard a lot about the rise of forces who want to pull America and Israel apart. So I can tell you one thing. I guarantee you this. They will fail. They will fail. Our shared values are too deep. Our shared interests are too strong. Our shared destiny too intertwined. But having said that, I will also tell you we must never take anything for granted. Those who seek to defame this great organization AIPAC, those who seek to undermine American support for Israel, they must be confronted. Despite what they claim, they do not merely criticize the policies of Israel’s government. G-d I'm used to that. That happens every five minutes. They do something else. They spew venom that has long been directed at the Jewish people. Again, the Jews are cast as a force for evil. Again, the Jews are charged with disloyalty. Again, the Jews are said to have too much influence, too much power, too much money. Ladies and gentlemen, you know what the best way to respond to this kind of hatred is? We read it. We read it just a few days ago in the Book of Esther when Mordechai confronted Haman of Persia. The best way to respond to those who hate the Jews is not to bow down to them. It’s to stand up to them. So I have a message to all the antisemites out there – whether they live in modern Persia, in the palaces of Tehran or the bunkers of Beirut; whether they march through the streets of Charlottesville or murder worshippers in a synagogue in Pittsburgh; whether they voice their hatred in political parties in Britain, or Europe, or the United States… The Jewish people do not bow down. We stand up. We fight. And we win. My friends, ladies and gentlemen, some people will just never get it. They’ll never understand why the vast majority of Americans – Jews and non-Jews alike – support Israel. Take it from this Benjamin, it’s not about the Benjamins. The reason the people of America support Israel is not because they want our money, it’s because they share our values. They just don’t' get it. It’s because America and Israel share a love of freedom and democracy. It's because we cherish individual rights and the rule of law. It's because we don’t judge people by the color of their skin, their religion or their sexual orientation. I am proud of Israel’s vibrant democracy, where no one – no one – is a second-class citizen. All of Israel’s citizens are first-class citizens. All of Israel's citizens whether Jew or Arab, Muslim, Christian, or Druze, have exactly the same individual rights. We vote in the same elections. We’re subject to the same laws. We study in the same universities. And we are also treated in the same hospitals. But Israel is also the one and only country on earth in which the Jewish people exercise our collective right of self-determination. And that right is expressed in the Star of David that is on our flag, in the Hatikvah that is our national anthem, in Hebrew our official language and most powerfully, in the right of every Jew across the world to automatically immigrate to Israel and become a citizen if they choose to do so. It is these features of our collective existence that the Nation State bill enshrined into an historic constitutional law. And contrary to the false attacks and allegations, it did not denigrate any individual rights, which remain sacred and equal for all our citizens. And it will always be that way. Israel will always be a democracy, just as Israel will always be the Jewish State, a place where all Jews anywhere can always call home, no matter how they pray or how they wish to conduct their lives. Israel is the home of all Jews. That is why we all celebrate today the democratic, Jewish State of Israel. We know the truth. Ladies and gentlemen, the Jewish state that Herzl envisioned, the Jewish state that Ben-Gurion proclaimed, is the same Jewish state whose future I am working to secure. I hope the people of Israel continue to allow me to lead them for many years to come. And I am as confident as ever, that as Israel takes its rightful place among the nations, you will be there by our side. You've always been there by our side. America will be there by our side. Thank you AIPAC. Thank you all for standing with Israel. May G-d bless you, may G-d bless America and may G-d bless our great alliance. Thank you all."
