He traveled to the Dead Sea on Sunday and even though he is injured, the dedicated EMT took his medical kit and bluebird communication device with him in on the off chance that he may able to help someone on the way if there was an accident. At 11:00 p.m. his phone rang and it was the dispatch center asking if he was near Ein Bokek. The dispatcher told him that there was a young boy who was unconscious in the Crown Plaza Hotel Lobby. Sholem told them that he would go and treat the boy, but it would take him a few minutes as he was hobbling on a crutch. The dispatcher told him that he was the only first responder in the area. When Sholem arrived at the hotel lobby he found a young boy who had suffered a seizure and was unconscious albeit breathing and had a pulse. Sholem, not wasting any time, put on a non-rebreather mask with high-flow oxygen and opened an IV line to administer fluids. A few minutes later a doctor who had been staying at the hotel and heard the commotion came downstairs and saw Sholem providing the child with medical care and he joined in the treatment, instructing Sholem to administer another 500 ccs of saline after the first bottle finished. Ten minutes later, the boy slowly began to regain consciousness. The ambulance took another 20 minutes to arrive, leaving Sholem and the doctor to treat the boy alone for nearly half-an-hour. “It is tough to know what would have happened had I not been there. I think that had the boy not received fluids, then he would have had another seizure because it very much appeared like the boy was suffering from dehydration. I can say that I am really happy that I took my physiotherapist’s advice to come down here, and I am also thankful that I was able to help this boy with my knee the way it is. The situation appeared fairly urgent and the boy’s mother thanked me profusely for helping her son in his time of need.” Upon hearing the story, President and Founder of United Hatzalah Eli Beer said: “This story warms my heart as it shows just how important our model of lifesaving really is. Any person at any time can be confronted with a medical emergency whether they are shopping, driving, or trying to relax at a hotel at the Dead Sea. Sholem’s actions are those of a dedicated volunteer and this story, the rescue of this young boy, and the countless others like it are exactly why I began to create United Hatzalah 30+ years ago.”

Attached photo (of Abu Dia) credit: ISA The following has been cleared for publication: The Israel Security Agency (ISA), in cooperation with the IDF, recently uncovered a terrorist cell that had been recruited by senior Hamas operatives from the Gaza Strip in order to carry out a suicide car bombing on or around 9 April 2019, the date of the elections. Yehiye Abu Dia, 23, a resident of A-Zaim who identifies with the Hamas terrorist organization, was arrested on 31 March 2019. In his ISA interrogation, it was learned that Abu Dia had been in contact with senior Hamas operatives in the Gaza Strip via the internet, had been recruited for military activities, and agreed to carry out missions and act as a suicide bomber. In his contacts with Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip, Abu Dia was instructed to purchase a car and rent a storage facility in order to prepare the car bomb and also to monitor the best site for the attack in the area of Ma’aleh Adumim where there would be a high concentration of buses, civilians and soldiers. Abu Dia followed instructions, observed crowded locales and reported to the cell, which chose the optimal site and directed him to carry out the attack quickly. As part of preparations for the attack, Abu Dia was instructed by the Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip to photograph a will on behalf of the Hamas military wing. Abu Dia planned to film himself reading his will, with a Hamas military wing ribbon tied around his head, prior to setting out and purchased a tripod for this purpose. Abu Dia will be indicted in the coming days. A senior ISA official noted: “The Hamas terrorist infrastructure in the Gaza Strip is constantly working to recruit Hamas operatives from the Judea and Samaria to carry out murderous terror attacks in order to undermine the security and stability of the area. This activity by the Hamas military wing joins a long list of attempted attacks in recent years directed by Hamas in the Gaza Strip through militants recruited in Judea and Samaria that have been foiled by the ISA and which have led to many people being imprisoned. The ISA and the security forces will continue anti-terrorism operations against Hamas.”

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, this morning (Sunday, 28 April 2019), issued the following statement: "I condemn the abhorrent attack on a synagogue in California; this is an attack on the heart of the Jewish people. We send condolences to the family of Lori Gilbert-Kaye and our best wishes for a quick recovery to the wounded. The international community must step up the struggle against antisemitism." In light of the upsurge in antisemitic attacks around the world, Prime Minister Netanyahu will, this week, convene a special discussion of all elements dealing with the issue.
