- President Rivlin welcomed a delegation of leading Australian politicians to Beit HaNasi
President Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin Yesterday, Tuesday 29 October / 30 Tishrei, welcomed a delegation of leading Australian political figures, past and present and headed by former prime minister John Howard, to Beit HaNasi. Attached photo credit: Mark Neiman (GPO) The delegation is in Israel at the initiative of the Israeli Embassy in Canberra, together with the Ministry for Jerusalem Affairs and the Australian Jewish community. On Thursday, there will be ceremonies to mark the 102nd anniversary of the victory of the ANZAC forces, including the Desert Mounted Force and the Australian Light Horse in the capture of Beersheva during the First World War, a date of great historical significance. “We have been close friends for 70 years now. Our friendship is based on the shared value of democracy, our shared history and on strong bipartisan support,” said the president at the beginning of his remarks, welcoming the delegation to Israel. He added that he was looking forward to his visit to Australia in early 2020, which has been in planning for a long time and represents an important additional step in the relations between the countries. The president continued, “Despite the huge geographical distance between Israel and Australia, we share many common challenges in different fields. The cooperation between us could lead to shared solutions. Two years ago, I was honored to participate in the centenary celebrations of the ANZAC forces in the capture of Beersheva. That victory changed the face of the Middle East. And today, the region is facing geo-strategic changes and we are following them closely and with readiness.” During the conversation, the representatives of the Australian Jewish community expressed the concern the community feels about the legal case of Malka Leifer. The president stressed he understood the gravity of the issue for the Australian public and added that it was painful for us, too. He also said that the relevant authorities at the State Prosecutor, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Justice Ministry are of the opinion that extradition should be carried out as soon as possible and are doing all in their power to ensure that is the case. “The Israeli legal system is independent, but the State of Israel is doing everything possible to move the extradition forward,” the president said. #JohnHoward #Australian #IsraelPresident #Rivlin #worldNews #IsraelNews

- In Historic First, all of the Monotheistic Religions Sign Document Dedicated to the Value of Life
At a historic meeting held Yesterday (Monday, 28 October 2019), at Vatican City, representatives of the Chief Rabbinate, along with the heads of the major faiths, signed a historic and preliminary document (see attached PDF file) calling on doctors around the world not to assist in killing people even if they terminal patients. Attached photo credit: Chief Rabbinate Spokesperson Kobi Alter Recent years have seen an increase in "mercy killing" in various countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, and Australia, and in several US states. There are hospitals in these countries that encourage certain doctors and medical personnel to disconnect terminal patients from cardio-pulmonary resuscitation machines, thereby allowing patients to expire in the absence of appropriate care, and even encourage families to actively end the lives of terminal patients by injecting toxins into their bodies; in extreme cases healthy people choose to end their lives assisted by doctors. According to the Jewish faith, as well as the other monotheistic religions, this constitutes actual murder with the backing of medical personnel around the world. In reaction to this and at the initiative of Rabbi Prof. Avraham Steinberg, an inter-faith committee was established together with representatives of other religions. After lengthy discussion, the committee formulated a position paper on the importance of continuity of life and the meaning of murder for a patient, his family and even for the element carrying out the murder. Joining in this position paper were representatives of Sunni Muslims from Indonesia (the largest Sunni group in the world), and of the Greek Orthodox Church, as well as from other faiths around the world. The signing ceremony for the historic declaration was held at Vatican City in Rome. A Chief Rabbinate delegation led by Supreme Rabbinical Council members Rabbi Ratzon Arousi and Rabbi Eliezer Simcha Weiss, together with Professor Steinberg, a representative of the Chief Rabbinate to the Inter-faith Conference that initiated the writing of the declaration, Chief Rabbinate Director General Rabbi Moshe Dagan, Oded Wiener and Rabbi David Rosen traveled – at the behest of the chief rabbis of Israel – to the Vatican in order to sign the historic declaration. In a "sense of the Torah" letter, Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef wrote: "Killing terminal patients is certainly included under the prohibition 'You shall not murder' in the Ten Commandments. Happy is man – every man – that he was created in the Divine Image. Life is a gift from the Creator of the world which we cannot take – Heaven forfend! – from others." Rabbi Yosef added: "However, every effort must be made to ease the suffering and the pain of patients approaching death, medically, spiritually and materially, without hastening their death." In a special letter on the occasion of the signing ceremony, Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi David Lau referred to the importance of the occasion and the fact that he was unable to attend and sign the position paper that unites the three monotheistic religions. He expanded on the importance of the value of life in Judaism including the principle that one may not hasten the death of any person even if there appears to be no chance of recovery. Rabbi Lau lent his support to the families that must face the suffering of a loved one but noted that they must remember that the importance of life must be upheld even in difficult times. In conclusion, Chief Rabbi Lau wrote that Jewish law holds that 'There is a severe prohibition on causing the death of any person even if he is in a difficult and terminal situation. In certain cases, it is possible to discuss refraining from prolonging life but no action may be carried out to shorten life. Whoever kills the dying, kills." Chief Rabbi Lau ended his letter: "May it be His will that together we will instill this position in all humanity." Following the reading of the main points of the declaration and the chief rabbis' letters, representatives of the participating religions spoke. The first speaker was Chief Rabbinate Council member and Chief Rabbi of the city of Kiryat Ono Rabbi Ratzon Arousi, who all chaired the Chief Rabbinate delegation. He referred to the great importance of the declaration and noted that it was signed by representatives of all the world's faiths. "This is an historic day in which representatives of all faiths sign a statement calling for the saving of life. Its dissemination around the world will bring peace and we will live together. The sanctity of life is an important value in Judaism. Happy is man that was created in the image of G-d and his life is determined by G-d." The representatives of the Chief Rabbinate signed the declaration as it was formulated by Prof. Steinberg – who serves on the Pontifical Academy for Life and as a representative of the Chief Rabbinate for inter-faith dialogue – together with representatives of the other faiths. The declaration details the importance of life for all persons who were created in the Divine Image and notes that the value of life is a supreme value for all of the participating faiths. After the signing, the document was presented to Pope Francis by the committee members and by Chief Rabbinate Director General Rabbi Moshe Dagan, who presented the Pontiff with a gift on behalf of the Chief Rabbinate – an engraving of the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Chief Rabbinate Council member Rabbi Eliezer Simcha Weiss thanked the representatives of the other faiths for their participation and for the important call and said that this was an historic and important day. He noted that this week's Sabbath Torah portion was Noah (Genesis 6:9-11:32) in which the nations of the world are commanded to observe the seven precepts of Noah including the precept to preserve life and said that, "By this joint declaration, we are helping to keep this precept by the believers of all faiths." #Rabbinate #Rabbi Prof. Avraham Steinberg #Israel #news #worldNews
- Netanyahu just been appointed Minister of Diaspora Affairs yesterday
Following is an excerpt from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's remarks Yesterday (Monday, 28 October 2019), at the Menachem Begin Heritage Center in Jerusalem, to the Attached photo credit: Koby Gideon (GPO) Jewish Agency Board of Governors: "The only way to secure the Jewish future, the necessary condition for securing the Jewish future is to secure the future of the Jewish state. The Jewish state, I believe has responsibility for the Jewish communities around the world. I have just been appointed Minister of Diaspora Affairs yesterday. The government approved it without debate. I intend to pass money from that office to the purpose of protecting Jewish communities from the rising scourge of violent antisemitism, and therefore that money will pass and it’s overdue. But we have obviously other challenges: to battle the spirit – if that’s what it could be called – the evil spirit of antisemitism; to encourage and to demand from governments worldwide to fight it; to cooperate with them in fighting it; to foster the Hebrew language, the identity, Jewish identity, the connection to Israel, which I believe is vital, as I said, for securing the Jewish future. But if you remove the State of Israel, there is no Jewish future. Iran wants to develop nuclear weapons. It’s transgressing on its agreement and commitment. Iran wants to develop precision guided missiles that can hit any target in Israel within five to ten meters. It’s doing that. Iran wants to use Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen as bases to attack Israel with statistical missiles and precision-guided missiles. That is a great, great danger. To ward off this danger, we have to do two things. First we must unite, because in the face of danger, we unite. This is not a spin, this is not a line, this is a real thing that is happening as the power balance in the Middle East changes. We must be strong. And to be strong, we have to be united as a people, united in spirit, united in our quest to secure the future of the Jewish state and the Jewish people. But to be strong, you have to be strong militarily. And to be strong militarily, we have to shift now money from the civilian areas to the military areas. That is very hard to do. You can do it in a time of crisis, when things happen that everybody can see, or you can do it in anticipation of avoiding a crisis. And that requires a very broad-shouldered government. That’s what we need today. We will have to change our priorities now, because the first thing we must do is ensure the security and safety of the Jewish state. It is well within our powers. We have the ingenuity. We’ve already developed what we need, offensive and defensive weapons. But we need a lot. We enjoy the friendship of the United States and the solid alliance, but always we remember the principle that I annunciate time and time again, during every year as my tenure as prime minister, Israel must be able to defend itself, by itself, against any threat. And this now requires a national commitment, a broad based national commitment to arm the State of Israel so that we can defend ourselves by ourselves against any threat." #Netanyahu #Jerusalem #Israel #News
- Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Meets with US Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin
Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, this afternoon (Monday, 28 October 2019), at the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem, met with US Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin. Attached photo credit: Amos Ben-Gershom (GPO) Prime Minister Netanyahu at the start of the meeting: “Welcome, Secretary Mnuchin. This is I don’t know which visit since you took office. Our relationship and our alliance has never been stronger. First, I want to congratulate President Trump, the Armed Forces of the United States and the American people for the successful action against Baghdadi, and it’s good that this murderer has met his fate. We do know that we still have an ongoing battle against terrorism, both of the extremist Sunnis led by Daesh, but also the extremist Shiites led by Iran, that is making a plunge for everything and everywhere in the Middle East. Iran is seeking to develop now precision-guided munitions, missiles that can hit any target in the Middle East with a circumference of five to ten meters. They are developing this in Iran. They want to place them in Iraq and in Syria, and to convert Lebanon’s arsenal of 130,000 statistical rockets to precision-guided munitions. They seek also to develop that, and have already begun to put that in Yemen, with the goal of reaching Israel from there too. We view Iran as the greatest threat to peace, stability and our security, and the security of many others. They fired into Saudi Arabia. They’ve interfered with international shipping lanes. They’ve attacked Americans and they’ve killed Americans throughout the last ten years in Afghanistan and elsewhere. Iran is the single greatest threat to stability and peace in the Middle East. That doesn’t mean that there are no others. There are. We are, the Middle East is rich with several things, and one of them is terrorist-exporting nations and groups. So while there’s a tremendous achievement yesterday in the action against the leader of Daesh, there still remains a massive effort against the other forces of terror, and the nation, the terror-state of Iran. We have enjoyed great support from the United States in this effort twice. One, in the military assistance that the United States generously gives us. And second, in the effort that you and President Trump lead all the time, which is the increase of sanctions against Iran. You have recently added the anti-money laundering sanctions, which apply to the banks. That’s a very powerful tool, in addition to others that you put forward. And I encourage you to put even more. Iran’s capacity—we see this very clearly—to launch its aggression, to develop its weapons of death, to purvey its menacing ways: that capacity is diminished to the extent that you can tighten your sanctions and make their, the availability of cash more difficult for them. We see this in every part of the Middle East. I want to thank you for what you’ve been doing, and encourage you, Steve, to do more, more, a lot more. And thank you for your friendship.” Also attending the meeting were – inter alia – National Security Council Director Meir Ben-Shabbat, Israeli Ambassador to the US Ron Dermer, Bank of Israel Governor Amir Yaron, Prime Minister’s Office Acting Director General Ronen Peretz, National Economic Council Chairman Avi Simhon. #USSecretaryoftheTreasuryStevenMnuchin.#Netanyahu #WorldNews #IsraelNews
