  • PM Netanyahu’s Remarks at the Joint Statement with IDF Chief-of-Staff Lt.-Gen.

Following are Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s remarks Yesterday (Tuesday, 12 November 2019), at the Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv, at the joint statement with IDF Chief-of-Staff Lt.-Gen. Aviv Kochavi and ISA Director Nadav Argaman: “Citizens of Israel, the IDF targeted senior Islamic Jihad commander Baha Abu al-Ata (https://twitter.com/IDF?lang=en). Over the past year, this arch-terrorist was the main instigator of terrorism from the Gaza Strip. He initiated, planned and carried out many terrorist attacks. He fired hundreds of rockets at communities in the area adjacent to the Gaza Strip, whose suffering we have seen. He was in the midst of planning additional attacks in the immediate short term. He was a ticking bomb. The action to target him had been recommended by the Director of the ISA and the heads of the security agencies. It was discussed by the Security Cabinet in a series of in-depth meetings in recent months. The Security Cabinet unanimously approved the final decision to act in this manner ten days ago and authorized me to order that it be carried out at a time suggested by the IDF and the ISA. The IDF and the ISA indeed identified a date. They identified a unique window of opportunity to carry out the action, under optimal conditions, with maximum chance of success and minimal chance for hitting anyone uninvolved. In light of this, I decided to accept their joint recommendation and I approved the carrying out of the action. I congratulate the IDF and the ISA. I would also like to specially congratulate the Air Force and IDF Intelligence for the successful and precise operation. The basic assumption of all terrorists is identical. They think that they can attack civilians and concurrently hide behind civilians. However, we have proven that it is possible to attack murderers with minimal harm to innocents. Whoever thinks that it is possible to hurt our citizens and evade our long arm – is mistaken. We have proven that we can attack with surgical precision anywhere terrorists hide. Whoever hurts us – we will hurt them. Citizens of Israel, I request that you strictly follow the instructions of IDF Home Front Command (https://www.oref.org.il/894-en/Pakar.aspx). These instructions save lives. Do not take unnecessary chances. All that needs to be done is simply to follow these instructions. We have considerable experience on this score and it is important to the security of each and every one of you and of your families. I would like to reiterate: Israel is not interested in escalation, but will do everything necessary to defend ourselves. And I say in advance: This could take time. Patience and composure are required. The IDF must be allowed to do its work.” #Israel #Netanyahu #DefenseMinister #IDF #WorldNews

  • President sent a letter of solidarity to Holocaust survivor and Italian Life Senator Liliana Segre

President Rivlin: “Your personal mission, your strength and your bravery are a role model for us in Israel and for Jewish communities around the world.” President Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin this morning, Sunday 10 November / 12 Cheshvan, sent a letter of solidarity to Holocaust survivor and Italian Life Senator Liliana Segre, after the Milan police decided she required constant close protection following hundreds of anti-Semitic threats on her life. Segre, 93, called on the Italian parliament to fight anti-Semitism and hate crimes and to establish a parliamentary commission to combat them. Since her proposal was accepted, Segre has received hundreds of anti-Semitic messages threatening her life, and will be guarded by police from now on. In his letter, the president wrote, “I was appalled to hear the news that anti-Semitic threats against you require you to receive protection to ensure your safety, and deeply regret that the circumstances of me writing to you are so distressing. Your personal mission, your strength and your bravery are a role model for us in Israel and for Jewish communities around the world. No words can adequately express my horror and disgust that you should be exposed to such criminal behavior. As Holocaust survivor, you have seen the terrible and tragic consequences of anti-Semitism if not stopped; as a Life Senator of the Italian Republic, you have been recognized ‘for outstanding patriotic merits’; as a campaigner for justice and against racism and anti-Semitism, you work tirelessly for a better world. Your case, unfortunately, is yet another terrible example of the reality for Jews in Europe today, but I believe that the most appropriate response is to carry on doing what you believe in. Equality, human rights, accepting the other and tolerance are key to Judaism and universal human values. They are the foundations on which our lives are based, and without them, we are lesser people. It would be a great honor, personally and for the State of Israel, to welcome you to Jerusalem and to visit Israel." #Jerusalem #IsraelNews #President #Israel #News

  • HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS AND RESCUER FROM GREECE REUNITE AT YAD VASHEM

THE JEWISH FOUNDATION FOR THE RIGHTEOUS BRINGS TOGETHER SURVIVORS AND THE WOMAN WHO SAVED THEM DURING WORLD WAR II (3 November 2019 – JERUSALEM) Two Holocaust survivors now living in Israel were reunited today with their Greek rescuer in the Hall of Names at Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, in Jerusalem. The emotional reunion, initiated by the US-based Jewish Foundation for the Righteous (JFR), took place in the presence of some 40 descendants of the survivors who are alive today because of the heroic actions taken 76 years ago. Survivors Sarah Yanai (née Mordechai) and Yossi Mor (né Mordechai), were reunited with Melpomeni Dina (née Gianopoulou), one of the people who helped save their lives during the Holocaust. Siblings Sarah and Yossi were born in Veria, Greece, a small town with 600 Jewish residents, located near Thessaloniki. Today, they reside in Ramat Hasharon in central Israel, and Be'er Sheva in the south of the country, respectively. For almost two years, Sarah (b. 1933) and Yossi (b. 1942), together with their mother Miriam (Mari) and their siblings Asher (b. 1935), Shmuel (b. 1938) and Rachel (b. 1940), were given refuge from their Nazi persecutors and provided for by Melpomeni Dina, along with her sisters, Efthimia and Bithleem (later Sumbasi), as well as members of the Axiopoulos family: Nikos, Petros and Polixeni Axiopoulos, Evlambia Tokatlido (née Axiopoulos) and Makrina Ananiadou (née Axiopoulos). Due to the heroism and sacrifice of both the Gianopoulou and Axiopoulos families, most of the immediate Mordechai family members survived the war. Efthimia Gianopoulou, Melpomeni's older sister, first met the Mordechai family while studying to become a seamstress with Mari. Since Efthimia was impoverished and orphaned at a young age, Mari did not charge her for the lessons. Efthimia grew close to the Mordechais and visited them regularly, even after they went into hiding aided by the Axiopoulos family. After their hiding place was compromised, Efthimia arranged for them to move to her home in Veria, where she lived with her two younger sisters, 15-year-old Bithleem, and 14-year-old Melpomeni. There, in one room, they accommodated seven members of the Mordechai family. The three sisters shared their food rations with the Mordechais and sheltered them despite the risk to their own lives. Since food supplies were scarce and very expensive, Bithleem and Melpomeni cultivated a piece of land they owned in a swamp near Yiannitsa, around 40 kilometers from Veria. They would return from working the land, carrying the provisions on their backs for all 10 people. After Shmuel died at the age of six and the family’s hiding place was discovered by the authorities, the Gianopoulous helped the Mordechais flee to the Vermio mountains, continuing to provide for them until the end of the war. On 12 April 1994, Yad Vashem recognized Melpomeni Dina as Righteous Among the Nations. Members of the Gianopoulou and Axiopoulos families were recognized a few years earlier in 1989. “Though we have met many survivors and their rescuers over the years, I never cease to be amazed by the bravery of the thousands of non-Jewish rescuers, the Righteous Among the Nations, who risked their lives and often the lives of their families to save Jews from death during the Holocaust,” said JFR Executive Vice President Stanlee Stahl. “This year, the reunion took place in Jerusalem at Yad Vashem, with living survivors, their children and grandchildren, all of whom are alive today thanks to the heroism of Melpomeni and her sisters, making the event all the more meaningful. We are eternally grateful for these Righteous Among the Nations, who acted courageously during World War II, and through our work, we hope to share their stories of bravery and compassion.” The JFR continues its work of providing monthly financial assistance to more than 265 aged and needy rescuers living in 18 countries. Since its founding, the JFR has provided more than $40 million to these noble men and women – helping to repay a debt of gratitude on behalf of the Jewish people. The JFR's Holocaust teacher education program has become a standard for teaching the history of the Holocaust, and educating teachers and students about the significance of the Righteous Among the Nations as moral and ethical exemplars. "Even 75 years after the end of World War II, Yad Vashem receives hundreds of requests each year to recognize non-Jews who risked their lives then to save Jews during the Holocaust," states Director of the Righteous Among the Nations Department Dr. Joel Zisenwine. "These rescuers are sparks of light during a period of darkness and devastation, and provide a source of inspiration to us all in today's fractured society. "Rescue took many forms, and the Righteous Among the Nations came from different countries, religions and walks of life. To date, Yad Vashem has recognized over 27,000 Righteous Among the Nations, 355 of whom are from Greece." Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, established in 1953 by at the Israeli parliament, (Knesset), is dedicated to Holocaust remembrance, education, documentation and research. Yad Vashem is at the forefront of unceasing efforts to safeguard and impart the memory of the victims and the events of the Shoah period; to document accurately one of the darkest chapters in the history of humanity; and to grapple effectively with the ongoing challenges of keeping the memory of the Holocaust relevant today and for future generations. #Israel #News

  • “In the Jewish State, everyone is equal before the law – Jews and Arabs, President Rivlin said

President Rivlin: "At times like this, the role of leaders is not to divide or exclude those from different parts of society. Their role is to show how, and it is certainly possible, to preserve the social contract, which is the essential soul of the Zionist state: a Jewish and democratic, democratic and Jewish state, both at the same time. In the Jewish State, everyone is equal before the law – Jews and Arabs, men and women, rich and poor. A reality where we decide for ourselves, on our own, for our own good, is an immense and rare treasure." Attached photo credit: Amos Ben Gershom (GPO) Israel President Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin Yesterday, Wednesday 30 October / 1 Cheshvan, at the first Herzl Conference on Contemporary Zionism held by the World Zionist Organization. The conference, this evening and tomorrow, is being held at the Herzl Center and examines how Herzl’s vision has become reality in Israeli society, under the title of ‘From Vision to Reality’. The conference considers the achievements, the activity and the strategy of Zionism in the 21st century. Chair of the WZO Executive, Avraham Duvdevani, also spoke at the event. At the beginning of his remarks, the president said, “The title of this conference, ‘From Vision to Reality’, sums up better than anything else the passage of history since Herzl published ‘Der Judenstaat’ and ‘Altneuland’. It was an incomparably grand but sober vision, which the Zionist movement turned into reality. It is in that reality that we live and work, and it is that reality that we are required to refashion for future generations of the Jewish people.” The president spoke about Herzl’s concept of the status of the State of Israel as a sovereign state: “The emancipation of the Jews of Europe gave them individual rights, if they were willing to sacrifice their collective identity. But this promise was breached, and even as citizens of equal rights the Jews were discriminated against at every turn, culminating in the ugliness of the Dreyfuss trial. It is no coincidence that Herzl wrote time and time again about the supremacy of justice. In some deep way, the rule of law and the sovereignty of the Jewish people were, for Herzl, synonymous. The principle of equality before the law is the full and complete realization of the sovereignty of the Jewish people.” The president added, “In the Jewish State, everyone is equal before the law – Jews and Arabs, men and women, rich and poor. A reality where we decide for ourselves, on our own, for our own good, according to ‘the principles of liberty, justice and peace, according to the visions of the prophets of Israel’, is an immense and rare treasure that few Jews have been fortunate to receive over the generations. The establishment of the State of Israel was a just act, a response to continued injustice against us, and we bear the responsibility to guard it.” The president also spoke about Herzl’s vision for religion and state, saying, “Herzl himself was, as we know, completely secular in his way of life. And yet, Herzl recognized the importance of the religious longing for the Land of Israel for the future of Zionism. The new national home for the Jewish people was established on Herzl’s vision of a liberal and secular entity along modern lines, and at the same time Herzl imagined a significant and central public presence for Jewish tradition and belief. In the elections that have just happened, we heard particularly polarizing messages on the issue of religion and state. We could learn much from Herzl, balancing respect for tradition with the ways of a modern state. At times like this, the role of leaders is not to divide or exclude those from different parts of society. Their role is to show how, and it is certainly possible, to preserve the social contract, which is the essential soul of the Zionist state: a Jewish and democratic, democratic and Jewish state, both at the same time,” concluded the president, with his best wishes for a successful and fruitful conference. #Jewish #people #Israel #president #Rivlin #News #worldNews

  • World Holocaust Memorial Center commemorates the 76th anniversary of the Jewish Uprising

Tomorrow, 30 October 2019, at 13:30, Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, will host a memorial ceremony commemorating the 76th anniversary of the Jewish revolt at the former German Nazi death camp, Sobibór. The event will take place in the Yad Vashem Synagogue and will include remarks from Yael Frieberg Atzmoni, representative of second generation Sobibór survivors, and Yossi Gevir, Director of the Governmental and External Affairs Department at Yad Vashem. There will also be a lecture by Naama Galil from Yad Vashem's Commemoration and Community Relations Division on the history of the camp and the revolt at Sobibór. The Revolt and Escape from Sobibór In October 1943, two Jewish prisoners, Leon Feldhendler and Lieutenant Aleksander (Sasha) Pechersky, planned and led the mass revolt and escape of the some 300 Jews incarcerated and awaiting extermination at Sobibór. Nearly half of the inmates were killed while escaping, and many others were caught in the manhunt that followed the escape. Approximately 50 survived by hiding in the nearby forests. One of three "Operation Reinhard" extermination camps, Sobibór began operations in April 1942. Historians have estimated that between 170,000 and 250,000 Jews were murdered at Sobibór by the time the camp closed in 1943 following the uprising. The Germans destroyed the camp in an attempt to erase all evidence of its existence. #Israel #Jerusalem #News
